Bengt G. Pettersson, co-founder of the Yekepa Recreational Building died on October 23 2004.

The recreational building was started by LAMCO, in the mid-1960's, to enable employees to enjoy and practice arts and crafts, and to support the Liberian arts and crafts. Merete Thejll and Bengt Pettersson, arrived as the Recreation Building was being completed and led and developed the centre through the mid to late 60's. Merete Thejll died in 1991 in Denmark, and Bengt Pettersson passed away on October 23 2004, in Sweden.

The facilities at the Recreation Building were planned and selected over an intense 6-month period prior to the couples' arrival in Yekepa. The facilities included music and dance, photography, pottery and ceramics, woodworking, metalworking and textile crafts.

At their departure for Denmark in late 60's, the centre was handed over to the leadership of Fritz Massaquoi, who led the centre thereafter.

Bengt Pettersson suffered from Parkinsons disease for the last 5 years of his life, and died following a stroke.
